Understanding Varicose Vein Disease
Varicose vein disease has plagued mankind for millennia. The stone tablet depicted here is a sculptural relief from the sanctuary of Amynos, who was the Athenian hero associated with healing. From circa 340 B.C., the image is the oldest known depiction of varicose veins. The carving shows the Greek official Lysimachides dedicating a fake leg suffering from a varicose vein to Amynos.
Varicose veins are common.
Varicose veins are one of the most common medical conditions in the United States, affecting about 25% of adults. This includes more than 22 million women and 11 million men between the ages of 40 to 80 years.
What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are caused by age, obesity, pregnancy, gender, genetics and occupations that involve prolonged sitting or standing. You are much more likely to have varicose veins if one of your parents has them.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by damaged valves in your veins that allow blood to flow in the wrong direction, which leads to stretched out, bulging veins.
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms include pain, throbbing, aching, heaviness, fatigue, swelling, restless legs and leg cramps. From a cosmetic standpoint, varicose veins are unsightly, often making sufferers feel self-conscious, which can limit a healthy and active lifestyle.
